There are sometimes other individual letters found on blocks like GM or CFD for the Central Foundry Division, but they are not part of the block. The block casting numbers do not have any letters in them. Small block casting date is located on driver side rear of block on flange forward of bellhousing.

I aplogize for not being more specific.the "010" is obviously a factory cast-in number(raised).not "stamped"like those metal stencil is by itself on the drivers side of the engine block and can be seen from under the vehicle.i'll get off my lazy $*# and try to find the casting number on the top rear of the block next to the firewall.,i know its gonna be a bitch.i'll try using a small mirror and a flashlight.ugh!i just finished replacing the upper exhaust manifold gaskets.there were no gaskets on the drivers side and all gaskets were in place on the passenger side except the rear one was half gone.found the leak!no more !the drivers side manifold had everything you could imagine bolted to it.rusted, rounded bolts and nothing wanted to go back in place like it came off.8 hours on that side alone.one hour on the passenger side.i love working on used vehicles that are neglected and abused.but a 1985 silverado for 250. The number itself can have 6, 7 or 8 numeral digits.
